Courtyard Garden
The design questions for this garden was how to define semi-private outdoor space within a larger multi-tenant courtyaard?

From the office lobby and indoor sitting areas there is a great view into the courtyard that focuses on the companies outdoor space.

We used the pathfinder tool to evaluate paving alternates to see the overall carbon impact of different paving alternates. After discussing the maintenance and installation specifics of the product and seeing that the lower cost alternate would make the whole project carbon positive in just 8 years, the client was excited to use the stabilized aggregate.

Selecting a aggregate was easy as the aggregate was already being used in the larger courtyard as mulch for the plantings, so we decided to use the same aggregate as both stabilized surface and as mulch for the new plantings.

The patio surface has a pleasing texture, making clear that you are in a garden space just by walking. Framed with pollinator plantings, multi-stemmed understory trees, and shade-providing canopy trees, the edges define a pleasant and peaceful retreat.
